Your probably not gonna find night vision goggles on the cheap because they are still relatively new technology and the army hasn’t started dumping them into surplus stores yet.

Q&A: Where is US Military equipment made?

Question by Snezzy: Where is US Military equipment made?
Just about everything I buy is made in China. There is no alternative, it seems, unless I make stuff myself out of trees I personally cut down on my own farm.

So where does the US military get its equipment and supplies? Are the uniforms made in China? The jets? The MREs? The night-vision equipment? The boots? The missiles? The rifles? The ammo?

Are any US companies still making supplies for the US Army? Or does Uncle Sam now rely on the “global economy”?

At the beginning of WWII the Japanese controlled the areas of Asia where rubber was grown, and the Canadian government built a synthetic rubber plant in Sarnia, Ontario. Is it possible to do anything like that anymore, or will all the steel, bricks and mortar have to be imported from China on ships that have been sunk by an enemy?

Does anyone have actual information about these questions? Or will y’all just start letting off steam, or grumbling or making excuses?

Question by Grandonia: What kind of cooling applications exist for military use ?
What I mean is following…. I wonder what kind of systems the military uses to cool down equipment, soldiers, medicine, plasma, etc…. and what are the challanges they face…. at google I found some, but I’m interested in knowing their real needs of cooling (navy, army, air force, gendarmerie, police, etc…) and challenges they face today. Is passive cooling enought or do they need active cooling… I’m asking about the military use because they normally look ahead and have harder or bigger challenges (environmental conditions, etc….) and later it will be used by civils.

What cooling technologies are used today by the military ? For example, in the communication sector (radars, radio transmitters, etc… they use thermelectric tecnology), in the electronic cooling sector they use vapous compression, in the night vision equipments they use stirling cycle to achieve ultra low cryogenic temperatures…. etc…. I’m lookinkg for answer that cover lots of application fields :)

Many of the applications are the same as the ones that exist in corresponding civilian applications except maybe cooling of weapon systems.

This is a video that shows how to make a near-infrared camera out of a cheap webcam. The basic process involves opening the webcam housing, removing the coated glass IR filter, and replacing it with a visible light filter (pieces of color film negatives work). The video shows some sample shots with one and two layers of visible light filters in place. Sorry the quality sucks, I recorded it with my cell phone.
