Question by Proud mumma!: How do night vision cameras work?
I don’t understand how reflective surfaces and people’s eyes can be illuminated like there is light when its night vision. There should be no light sources within the camera itself or outside of the camera… am I right?

Answer by Caoedhen The “night vision” you are referring to is actually reflected infrared light. Almost all of these “night shot” capable cameras actually have IR emitters, which you cannot see with the naked eye, but the camera can. You see the eyes and reflective materials because they are actually reflecting the IR light from these emitters back into the camera.
Military style night vision uses image intensifier tubes to gather and amplify the light available. They require some amount of light to work, hence the name “starlight scopes”. Even some of these have IR emitters for use in totally dark areas, like the interior of a building where you have no light at all.

Question by hurricanejbb: How can you blind infrared or night vision cameras?
I’ve heard that if a CCTV camera that operates on a photoelectric sensor is exposed to infrared LEDs, it will be overwhelmed and will present the image as an opaque white light. Is there any way this type of interference can be done with night vision or infrared cameras, and if so, how?
